KAT1E

Kent Adult Type 1 Diabetes Education (KAT1E) is a diabetes education programme for people living with type 2 diabetes.

Certified by the Quality Institute for Self-Management Education and Training (QISMET) Diabetes Self-Management Education quality standard, The course provides information and support for people with type 1 diabetes.

The course provides an opportunity for participants to share their experiences about managing diabetes on a day-to-day basis. KAT1E is led by qualified healthcare professionals including a Diabetes Specialist nurse and Diabetes Dietitian.

Course content

  • Living with diabetes: Injection technique, all about insulins, blood glucose and ketone monitoring.
  • Carbohydrate counting: Learn how to estimate the carbohydrate content of your meals and snacks.
  • Adjusting insulin doses: Learn how to adjust your insulin with your meals, for physical activity and during illness.
  • Hypoglycaemia: Recommended treatment and driving guidelines.
  • Long-term health: How to develop effective relationships with healthcare professionals.
  • Social aspects: Pregnancy, travel and driving.
  • Your questions and answers.

Course objectives

  • Learn new skills and develop confidence in the daily management of your diabetes.
  • Discover ways to reduce hypos, manage weight and improve wellbeing.
  • Meet others and share similar experiences.

Course delivery

  • Four-day course (one day per week for four weeks) in locations across East Kent.
